This concert at EMC marked the 40th Anniversary of Richard starting to play the organ at EMC and was planned after his retirement as EMC organist in January 2017. A wonderful evening of classical and modern organ and keyboard music, with some original compositions written by Richard
These included the memorable and beautifully performed New York Organ Fantasia which was premiered at this concert. Richard also sang a number of his favourite songs from musical theatre.
The guest singer was Lesley Chapman from Bath.
Proceeds of the concert will go to the "New Organ Fund".
After forty years faithful service, Richard Muddiman decided to ‘retire’ as our organist. He has been an integral part of our worship for so many years it seemed the right time to refresh our memories of his talents and time with us.
In Richard’s own words, as a boy chorister he was fascinated by the organ and after completing his pianoforte exams, he was delighted when the choirmaster permitted him to practice on the organ. After two years of training with the Royal School of Church Music with two tutors who nurtured his abilities and passion for playing and musicality, Richard heard through Colin and Jose Taylor, members of EMC, that Ron Perkins was looking for a sub-organist to assist him. Ron’s wonderful and unstinting commitment to the music together with his encouragement, meant that Richard was more than willing to ‘take over the baton’ on Ron’s retirement. Having been appointed as sub-organist in 1977, Richard has now decided in his fortieth year that the time has come for him to retire.
He has admitted this has not been an easy or lightly taken decision but having been privileged to work with some inspiring ministers and wonderful musicians, he feels this is the right time for him to ‘pass on the baton’. He particularly wishes to thank Sarah and Andrew Meech, Beth Hill, Simon Jump, Phil Gascoigne and David Williams for their faithful support. Richard has also expressed his heartfelt appreciation for the love and support he has experienced over the years from the congregation.
Richard’s last service was at 10.30 am on Sunday 1st January 2017. On Saturday 20th May 2017 Richard entertained us with a farewell concert.
On behalf of the church, the Leadership Team wish to express their grateful thanks to Richard for his unfailing professionalism and commitment to the music at EMC over the last forty years.
"I would like to thank all who contributed to my Farewell Gift. I received a wonderful watch and generous cheque. It was lovely of Nik to kindly present them to me on January 1st. I have been fortunate to have had an incredible time as organist these past 40 years and it's been a privilege to serve EMC in this way. I wish to thank David Williams, Andrew and Sarah Meech, Beth Hill, Simon Jump, Phil Gascoigne and Martin Harrison for their contribution to the music at EMC. It has also been a privilege working with some inspiring Ministers during this time. Finally, I wish to thank you all, for your love, support, and kind words expressed about my music. I'm Grateful, I'm so Grateful! God Bless you all."
